INSPIRING WOMEN | NINA SIMONE

INSPIRING WOMEN | NINA SIMONE

.
Nina Simone's music is one of the few constants in my life. There is a Nina song to accompany every mood, every life event. For heady and upbeat moments, there's I'm feeling good. Her rageful lyrics are a perfect soundtrack when I'm seeing and feeling the injustices of the world. The melancholic edge of Ain't Got No, I Got Life is just right for when you've got the blues.
.
Whilst her deep lyrics and passionate performances have made Nina Simone an icon, they are not the only reason I have chosen to name one of my favourite LUXTRA bags in her honour.

Nina Simone
.
Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, in North Carolina in 1933, Nina learned to play piano at just 3 years old. She could soon play virtually anything by ear. She never intended to become a singer however. Rather, it was a need to earn some extra cash that led her to take a job playing piano in a bar. The only catch was... she had to sing too. Eunice quickly adopted a stage name - Nina Simone - to hide this fact from her mother, who likened singing in a bar to “working in the fires of hell.”
.
At the start of her career, Nina's repertoire blended jazz with blues, gospel and classical music. The motive behind her music was to entertain, but perhaps not much more. It was the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963 that left four young African American girls dead that flicked a switch. After hearing about the news, Nina wrote Mississippi Goddam - the lyrics of which came to her in a "rush of fury, hatred and determination."
.
Nina is an inspiration and an icon in my eyes because she used her art and influence to push the Civil Rights agenda. She produced powerful political anthems that became a call to arms. She has left an indelible mark on the twentieth century. As Nina herself said, she was "a real rebel with a cause."
.
"We never talked about men or clothes. It was always Marx, Lenin and revolution – real girls’ talk".
