Rachel... the adult in the pic

A weekly (and hopefully entertaining) newsletter about sustainability / other cool things in start up life.

Hi team,

I hope you're enjoying the weekend. Thank you to everyone who completed the survey. You're real gems.

Today we meet my all-time-favourite business supplier: Rachel Tucker. I'll explain more below, but first we need to welcome some new faces!

Dominique, Gabriela, Anne-Claire, H., Brian, Maria, Mindi, Ilham, Connie, Kate, Michael, Sara, Erin, Rachel, Alex, Sandrine, Jacqui, Marie-Therese, and David - thank you for joining us. I hope you'll find some value in my Sunday sermons.

In case sustainability is your jam, there are lots of articles to discover in our newsletter archive. Some personal favourites include the article on cactus "leather", whether B Corp certification lives up to the hype, and some myths busted about leather (the real stuff).

But back to Rachel, and why I LOVE paying her company, Carrier 3PL. "3PL" by the way, is industry speak for Third Party Logistics, which basically means companies to which you can outsource your stock management and shipping.

Anyone who runs their own product-based business knows what a crazy percentage of time physically shipping orders takes up. I found I was increasingly spending precious hours each day packing orders and walking to and from the post office or drop off shop. I hated scheduling courier collection because I *literally* went crazy waiting for the courier to come by at some point between 8.30 am and 6 pm. I couldn't leave the house for fear of missing them and was in tears when they still hadn't showed up by 7 pm (unfortunately not an uncommon occurrence).

So, rather than seeing my therapist even more times per week with my nerves shot, I took matters into my own hands. Enter Rachel, stage left.

Since late 2020, LUXTRA's orders have been "pick and packed" (more logistics lingo) by Rachel's wonderful team down in Devon, in the south of England.

So I wanted to introduce her to you, so you can know a bit more about what goes on behind the scenes when you place an order with us!

Hi Rachel! Would you like to introduce yourself?

Hello, I am Rachel the MD and co-owner of Carrier 3PL and have been working in logistics now for 20+ years. With a fantastic team behind I purchased the business over 4 years ago now. Having grown up on a farm I have always said if I can lift a hale bale a 10kg box is not a problem!

Tell us a bit about your business.

Carrier3PL offers a specialised and complete scalable e-fulfilment packing service. We work with a wide range of online retailers as well as single project fulfilment projects for the public sector. Our service is offered to any business size we have no minimum order value and we can complement your business by providing a customer call/e-mail service for your customers, handling orders, returns and general enquiries.

What would surprise people about your work?

We can pack your order however you would like it, pack in tissue, include a ribbon or a gift note if required and even wash those garments that need that extra bit of cleaning!!

Brian, one of my favourite members of Rachel's team. A real sweet pea.

What does sustainability mean to you?

We encourage our clients to be as sustainable as possible offering packaging that can be recycled and providing advice on what can be purchased. As a company we use a local recycling company for the packaging and waste that we cannot re-use but we use as many boxes and packaging again, again and again.

What's your biggest challenge at the moment?

Obtaining the best postal rates for our clients and ensuring each parcel arrives in time and in the same condition it left us.

What's your favourite part of your work?

Making my customers happy and to be able to say “Yes”.

And the most difficult part?

Having to say “No”

Which is your favourite LUXTRA product?

I love all the Tote Bags, such lovely quality and colours.

Rachel's a LUXTRA tote fan

What are your top 3 things to eat / see / do in Devon?

Fishing, and I also love a roast dinner. Growing up on a farm all our vegetables were grown by my dad and still are!

I love spending time with my family, walking, cycling, beach time (winter to blow the cobwebs out, or summer!) and visiting those areas that you can only get to by foot….

Getting away from it all, down in Devon.

Wishing you all a really happy week ahead,

Jessica x
